The IPL 2026 mega auction in Jeddah has concluded after two days of frenzied bidding that produced the most expensive contracts in cricket history. Three players — Jasprit Bumrah, Travis Head, and Rashid Khan — each commanded bids exceeding ₹35 crore ($4.1 million), shattering the previous record set by Mitchell Starc in 2024.

The Headline Deals

Bumrah's record-breaking ₹38.5 crore ($4.5 million) deal with Royal Challengers Bengaluru headlined the auction. The Indian fast bowler, widely regarded as the best in the world across all formats, triggered a bidding war between five franchises that lasted 22 minutes — the longest in IPL auction history.

Travis Head's ₹36 crore deal with Gujarat Titans reflected the Australian's devastating form across formats over the past 18 months. Rashid Khan returned to Sunrisers Hyderabad for ₹35.2 crore, with the franchise refusing to let their talismanic leg-spinner join a rival.

The total spend across all 10 franchises reached ₹1,520 crore ($180 million), up 34% from the 2024 mega auction. The average price for a capped international player rose to ₹8.4 crore, reflecting the league's ever-growing broadcast revenues and global expansion ambitions.

Emerging Stars Who Cashed In

The auction wasn't just about established names. India U-19 star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, at just 15, was bought by Punjab Kings for ₹12 crore — the highest fee ever paid for an uncapped player. Afghanistan's Fazalhaq Farooqi, coming off a sensational World Cup campaign, commanded ₹14.5 crore from Delhi Capitals.

Several overseas T20 specialists saw their values skyrocket. England's Phil Salt went for ₹15.5 crore, while West Indian Nicholas Pooran's ₹16 crore deal reflected franchises' appetite for explosive middle-order batting.

What It Means for Cricket

The auction's escalating economics have reignited debate about cricket's financial hierarchy. IPL contracts now dwarf what most players earn from their national boards, creating tension around scheduling and player availability for international duty. The ICC has scheduled a working group to address these issues ahead of the 2027 World Test Championship cycle.

IPL 2026 begins on March 28, with defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders facing Mumbai Indians in the opener at Wankhede Stadium.
