2026 NFL Draft: The Deepest Quarterback Class in a Decade Has Teams Trading Up

The 2026 NFL Draft is shaping up to be the most quarterback-rich class since 2018, and the ripple effects are already being felt across the league. At least five quarterbacks are projected as first-round picks, and as many as three could go in the top ten — creating a chess match of draft capital, trade offers, and strategic maneuvering among quarterback-needy teams.

The Top Prospects

Carson Beck, Georgia's poised and prolific passer, is the consensus QB1 on most draft boards. His combination of arm talent, processing speed, and big-game experience (two College Football Playoff appearances) makes him the safest pick at the position. He profiles as a day-one starter with Pro Bowl ceiling.

Shedeur Sanders from Colorado has been the most polarizing prospect in the class. His quick release and accuracy are elite — completing 72% of his passes in his final college season. But questions about his supporting cast and willingness to throw into tight windows divide evaluators.

Quinn Ewers (Texas), Jalen Milroe (Alabama), and Cam Ward (Miami) round out the first-round group, each bringing distinct skill sets. Ewers is the classic pocket passer, Milroe adds dynamic rushing ability, and Ward has the strongest arm in the class with a gunslinger mentality.

The Trade Market

Teams picking outside the top five but desperate for a quarterback face a dilemma. The cost of trading up has skyrocketed — recent deals have required three first-round picks plus additional assets. The Raiders, Giants, and Titans are all reportedly exploring aggressive moves into the top three.

The teams holding top picks but not needing quarterbacks — Jacksonville at 2 and Carolina at 4 — hold enormous leverage. League sources suggest both teams have received "godfather offers" that would be difficult to refuse.

Historical Context

Elite quarterback classes tend to reshape the league for a decade. The 2004 class (Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, Ben Roethlisberger) and 2018 class (Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Josh Rosen) defined their respective eras. If even three of the 2026 prospects hit, franchise trajectories will shift dramatically.

The NFL Draft is scheduled for April 23-25 in Green Bay — the first time the event has been held at Lambeau Field. With quarterback drama guaranteed, it promises to be one of the most-watched drafts in years.
